| | BIRMINGHAM were narrowly beaten 47-43 by in-form Ipswich in an entertaining ROWE Motor Oil Premiership contest at Perry Barr.
It was a much improved display from the Curtis Sport Brummies who pushed the pre-season favourites hard.
They opened with a 4-2 from Jonas Jeppesen and Tobiasz Musielak as they took full advantage of an uncharacteristic error from Jason Doyle in the opening turns.
The visitors pulled back level in Heat Two though with Witches’ reserve pairing Dan Thompson and Jordan Jenkins replying instantly - and they would prove to be the deadly duo for the visitors overall.
A hat-trick of 3-3s followed with Keynan Rew taking the chequered flag against his former side in the third.
But the visitors then opened up an eight point lead with three straight heat advantages.
The Brummies didn’t let the heads drop though and were back on level terms three races later.
Firstly, Rew and a much more settled looking Michael Jepsen Jensen took a 4-2 which was then matched by a second of the night for Jeppesen and Musielak.
A first big 5-1 of the league campaign then came in Heat 11 with Matej Zagar claiming the win. But behind him, Doyle was chasing hard and in the end did remarkably well to stay on his machine as he was disqualified for leaving the circuit whilst Antti Vuolas came through for second.
Jepsen Jensen then led a shared Heat 12 before Ipswich got their noses back in front with a 4-2 in Heat 13 after Zagar retired whilst at the back.
But the visitors sealed the points with a race to spare when Vuolas crashed out of bend four - luckily, he was able to walk away from the spill despite hitting the home straight kick boards with some power.
The Brummies now take a fortnight’s break before their Easter Monday (April 21) home and away double against champions Belle Vue. They travel to Manchester at 12 noon with the return at Perry Barr at 7.30pm.
There is action in the Second City next Monday (April 14, 7.30pm) though as the Birmingham Ductair Bulls take on King’s Lynn Young Stars in the National Development Trophy.
BIRMINGHAM 43: Keynan Rew 9+1, Michael Jepsen Jensen 9, Jonas Jeppesen 8, Matej Zagar 7, Tobiasz Musielak 5, Jason Edwards 3+1, Antti Vuolas 2+1. IPSWICH 47: Dan Thompson 15, Jordan Jenkins 8, Jason Doyle 6, Danny King 6, Tom Brennan 5+1, Adam Ellis 4+2, Emil Sayfutdinov 3+1.
