| | BIRMINGHAM kicked off their National Development Trophy with a confident 51-38 victory over the Leicester Fox Cubs.
Despite a slow start in the first race, three successive 5-1 heat advantages opened up a comfortable eight-point lead for the Ductair Bulls early on.
In Heat Four, reserve Eli Meadows blasted out of gate one to add to his paid win in the reserves race.
Fox Cubs No.1 William Cairns slowed the home side with his impressive Heat Five win, prompting an immediate response from Tom Spencer and Arran Butcher, who got a 4-2 in Heat Six.
Two successive split heats left the Cubs clawing at an eight point gap.
Sparks flew in Heat Nine when Sam McGurk picked up Ace Pijper on the third bend and suffered a costly exclusion, leaving Pijper to seize and an important three heat points in the rerun.
Butcher and Leicester’s Mason Watson both fell independently in Heat 10, leading to a double exclusion that saw Watson withdraw from proceedings with a wrist injury.
Max James continued to impress with another win in Heat 11 over Cairns, leading into a split Heat 12.
A smart ride from Tom Spencer in Heat 13 continued to push the Bulls nine points clear of the Cubs – cementing victory with a 5-1 in Heat 14 from Captain Darryl Ritchings and reserve Senna Summers.
The Bulls selected gates one and three in Heat 15, but neither Max James nor Sam McGurk could hold Leicester’s Sonny Springer back from taking his third win of the night.
A shared final heat meant the Bulls emerged victorious, boasting an impressive 13 point margin.
Team Manager Laurence Rogers praised his side’s promising opening display.
“It was a good team performance, they were on it the whole way through making for some cracking racing,” he said.
“I was impressed by the whole team and I know there’s even more to come from some of the boys which is really encouraging.”
