REPORT / REACTION - BRUMMIES 43 KING’S LYNN 46

Tuesday August 20, 2024
BIRMINGHAM were again unable to experience that winning feeling as they were beaten 46-43 by King’s Lynn at Perry Barr on Monday.

It was yet another hugely frustrating and disappointing night for the Curtis Sport Brummies with a result which confirmed that they will finish bottom of the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership on their return to British Speedway’s top-flight.

Their night got off to a far from ideal start when Wiktor Lampart was disqualified from the opener. The Pole came down on turn one and after studying replays, SCB Referee Dave Watters put the blue exclusion light on - much to the dismay of the Brummies’ management team.

Yet despite having a man less in the re-run, Birmingham still edged ahead with captain Freddie Lindgren winning a rare 3-2 after Stars No.1 Jan Kvech retired with machinery problems.

The visitors then recorded back-to-back advantages to open up an 11-6 lead before an impressive and determined ride from Tom Brennan saw him work his way to the front to take the flag in Heat Four.

King’s Lynn opened up a nine point lead in Heat Five though with their second 5-1 of the night - but the Brummies instantly reduced the deficit back to five points with a maximum of their own from Lindgren and Lampart in the sixth.

That gap was down to three when Brennan and Michael Palm Toft got a 4-2 in Heat Seven before five 3-3s followed in the next six races. A 4-2 to King’s Lynn in Heat Nine was the only race to disrupt that sequence - an outing which completed a miserable night for Piotr Pawlicki which, understandably, saw him dragged out of Heat 12 after failing to get anywhere near to troubling the scorers, or the action, in his opening three rides.

Birmingham trailed by five with two races to go and thought they may have had a bit of fortune go their way when Patryk Wojdylo was excluded for delaying the start of Heat 14. But Stars reserve Lewis Kerr came in and won the race to seal the victory for the visitors whilst Sam Ermolenko’s decision to replace Michael Palm Toft with Leon Flint backfired with the Rising Star finishing last.

The Brummies did manage a consolation 5-1 in Heat 15 as Brennan and Lindgren capped off fine nights individually.

Elsewhere in summary, Zach Cook and Palm Toft scored in each of their outings whilst there were once again inconsistent showings from Lampart and Flint.

But the biggest cause of annoyance around the stadium came as Piotr Pawlicki’s Perry Barr struggles continued with a pointless performance proving extremely costly - a major factor, again, in seeing the Brummies fall to their 14th consecutive loss, which is understood to be a new, unwanted, club record.

CEO Nigel Tolley said: “I think everybody was expecting us to get points tonight but it wasn’t our night again was it?

“Every time it’s just a few points lately and what a run we’ve had of losing by such small margins at home, it’s unbelievable.

“Wiktor getting excluded in Heat One to me, that was ridiculous. He wasn’t the primary cause of the stoppage, it was on the first bend, it would’ve normally been all four riders back to the tapes and it wasn’t and I’m sure he would’ve scored points in that race.

“Freddie did superbly, Tom did superbly - I went up to Tom and said ‘I wish we could clone you!’

“Everybody tried their hardest, apart from one rider, mentioning no names, but we’ve just got to look to the future now.”

The Brummies have just two league fixtures remaining, both against injury-hit Ipswich, with their next outing at Perry Barr on Bank Holiday Monday (August 26, 7.30pm).

BIRMINGHAM 43: Freddie Lindgren 12+2, Tom Brennan 12+1, Zach Cook 7, Wiktor Lampart 5, Michael Palm Toft 4+2, Leon Flint 3+1, Piotr Pawlicki 0.
