| | BIRMINGHAM boss Sam Ermolenko admits he was more impressed with his side’s display as they took champions Sheffield to a last heat decider on Monday.
Unfortunately, the Curtis Sport Brummies couldn’t get the 5-1 they required and narrowly missed out 47-43.
Temporary signing Michael Palm Toft was already making his debut before the Perry Barr outfit had to make two late guest bookings in the shape of former Brummies Zach Cook and Paco Castagna.
And with all of that in mind, despite slipping to a seventh straight defeat, Ermolenko left the stadium feeling much more upbeat than in recent weeks.
“I’m impressed with them, they all had the spirit tonight,” he said.
“They have to believe in themselves, that’s a big part of it, and they want to win.
“Freddie (Lindgren) had the choice of taking gate two or four in Heat 15, he let Zach have two which was the better gate and he did great. Freddie battled hard but just couldn’t get over.
“We’re still working on building a solid team and when you’re patching things up with guest riders and not having your 1-7 it is hard.
“It’s hard to get it consistent at the moment, we’re still working on it, and when it does click we’ll be a force.
“The Perry Barr fans deserve a lot more but right now we’re just working with the tools we’ve got.”
The Brummies are back at Perry Barr next Monday (July 29, 7.30pm) when they face Belle Vue who are one of the two side’s they have enjoyed success against in this year’s ROWE Motor Oil Premiership.
ROWE MOTOR OIL PREMIERSHIP R2: BIRMINGHAM 43: Freddie Lindgren 13+1, Zach Cook 10, Wiktor Lampart 7, Tom Brennan 5+1, Michael Palm Toft 3+1, Paco Castagna 3+1, Leon Flint 2. SHEFFIELD 47: Max Fricke 12, Jack Holder 8+2, Jason Edwards 7+2, Chris Holder 7+1, Josh Pickering 5, Dan Gilkes 5, Kyle Howarth 3+2.
