SHEFFIELD 54 BRUMMIES 36

Thursday May 30, 2024
BIRMINGHAM put in an early battling effort at reigning champions Sheffield before eventually falling to a 54-36 defeat as they faded in the second half.

Despite being without Polish duo Piotr Pawlicki and Wiktor Lampart, the Curtis Sport Brummies stayed within touching distance of the Tigers and only trailed by six points with eight races gone.

In that opening spell, Birmingham restricted the hosts to just three advantages with skipper Steve Worrall taking the chequered flag in Heat One and Eight.

But that would be the last race winner for the Perry Barr outfit as the South Yorkshire side stepped things up another level from the ninth onwards.

Worrall top scored with 11+1 whilst Zach Cook worked solidly for his eight, paid nine total.

Justin Sedgmen chipped in with seven for a second meeting in succession whilst Tom Brennan endured one of his tougher nights in Brummies colours as he had to deal with Sheffield’s world class top trio of two former World Champions in Tai Woffinden and Chris Holder as well as Jack Holder, a current Grand Prix star who also broke the Owlerton track record.

Rising Star Leon Flint managed 4+2 whilst it was a much tougher night for guest reserve Simon Lambert.

Birmingham bosses are set to discuss their team situation on Friday with an announcement on who will be making way for Swedish superstar Freddie Lindgren expected later the same day.

The Brummies are back at Perry Barr on Monday (June 3, 7.30pm) as they welcome Ipswich for a second week running, this time in the Knockout Cup after the Witches sealed their passage by beating Leicester on Thursday.

SHEFFIELD 54: Chris Holder 14, Jack Holder 12, Tai Woffinden 11+1, Kyle Howarth 10+1, Jason Edwards 5+1, Dan Gilkes 2+1, Josh Pickering R/R.
BIRMINGHAM 36: Steve Worrall 11+1, Zach Cook 8+2, Justin Sedgmen 7+1, Tom Brennan 5, Leon Flint 4+2, Simon Lambert 1, Piotr Pawlicki R/R.
Sheffield win the aggregate point 99-81.
