| | BIRMINGHAM claimed all three league points on offer against leaders Ipswich in a thrilling Bank Holiday Monday contest at Perry Barr.
The Curtis Sport Brummies beat the Witches 49-41 before claiming the aggregate point in a Super Heat.
A heavy downpour at 6pm eventually delayed the start by 15 minutes - but it was worth the wait as both teams delivered a close fixture with some entertaining racing.
There was nothing to choose between the two sides with seven of the first nine races resulting in shared heats with both sides also registering a 4-2 apiece.
But Heat Ten began a defining spell of the fixture as the Brummies reeled off three advantages on the trot.
Firstly, Piotr Pawlicki and Steve Worrall combined for a 5-1 before a brilliant ride from Tom Brennan saw him fend off the challenge of impressive Ipswich No.1 Emil Sayfutdinov to get a 4-2 with Wiktor Lampart.
Lampart then came out in Heat 12 as a reserve switch and took the chequered flag alongside team-mate Zach Cook for a second maximum as the Brummies opened up a ten point gap.
The visitors were back to within six when they landed a 5-1 of their own in Heat 13, but the victory was sealed by a match winning ride from the returning Justin Sedgmen in Heat 14 who got the better of Ipswich’s tactical substitute Sayfutdinov.
Sayfutdinov stormed to victory in Heat 15, but with Brennan and Worrall keeping Witches guest Nicolai Klindt at bay, the scores were tied on aggregate following the first leg of their ROWE Motor Oil Premiership R1 fixture at Foxhall earlier in the season.
And when the same four riders finished in the same order in the Super Heat, the Brummies ensured they took all three league points on offer from the leaders who suffered just their second defeat of the season.
The Brummies are back on the road this Thursday (May 30, 7.30pm) when they travel to champions Sheffield
