BRUMMIES 47 BELLE VUE 43

Monday April 29, 2024
BIRMINGHAM bagged their first win of the season with a dramatic, last gasp 47-43 success over Belle Vue.

The scores were tied heading into Heat 15, but former Ace Tom Brennan and Piotr Pawlicki raced their way to a big 5-1 in the re-run after visiting captain Brady Kurtz was disqualified from the initial staging.

The night got off to a slow start once again for the Curtis Sport Brummies as they conceded a 5-1 in the opener.

But Zach Cook and Leon Flint halved that deficit instantly with a 4-2 in Heat Two.

Flint then combined with Pawlicki for an impressive 5-1 over Grand Prix star Dan Bewley in Heat Four to level the scores.

Four shared races followed with Vaclav Milik being the only winner for the Brummies during that run in Heat Six.

The hosts hit back-to-back 4-2s in Heats Nine and Ten - but the Aces struck successive results of the same outcome to reduce the gap back down to two.

Many made the visitors favourites to kick on and grab the win when they edged back in front with a 5-1 in Heat 13.

But when Zach Cook repaid the faith of management by keeping him in Heat 14 with Brennan also claiming third over Belle Vue’s reserve switch Connor Mountain, a last heat decider was on the cards with scores at 42-all.

A fired up Brennan and the talent and experience of former World No.6 Pawlicki was selected to lead the Brummies into that one - they went up against Bewley and Kurtz, the latter of whom was unbeaten from his programmed rides.

Brennan made a stunning getaway from the inside and Pawlicki joined him shortly after to send the Perry Barr crowd wild.

But there was drama when Kurtz steamed under Pawlicki into bend one of the third lap, sending the Pole rolling into the air fence.

After some deliberation, the Belle Vue No.1 was deemed to be the primary cause of the stoppage and was thrown out of the race.

And even though the option was there to award it, a re-run was ordered by SCB Referee Wayne Jarvis.

Thankfully that decision would not prove costly for the Brummies as Brennan and Pawlicki did land the last race maximum to earn Birmingham’s first race win since returning to the top-flight of British speedway.

They will now look to add to that result when they travel to King’s Lynn in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership this Thursday (May 2, 7.30pm).

BIRMINGHAM 47: Tom Brennan 9+2, Piotr Pawlicki 8+2, Leon Flint 7+1, Zach Cook 7+1, Steve Worrall 6, Vaclav Milik 5, Wiktor Lampart 5.
BELLE VUE 43: Brady Kurtz 11+1, Dan Bewley 7+1, Ben Cook 7, Norick Blodorn 7, Jaimon Lidsey 6, Connor Mountain 4+1, Connor Bailey 1.
