BIRMINGHAM moved back into the Cab Direct Championship play-off places after beating Plymouth 50-40 at Perry Barr.

It was just a second win of the season in the Second City for the Curtis Sport Brummies who claimed all three league points after securing a 97-82 aggregate success.

It means that it all comes down to a decisive double header at Edinburgh on Friday, with Birmingham potentially needing a big win themselves in Scotland, depending on how the first meeting pans out between Plymouth and the Monarchs.

Birmingham have kept their hopes alive thanks to a solid team effort against the Gladiators though.

Troy Batchelor produced his best score for the Club, winning three of his five rides on his way to 12 points.

Meanwhile he received solid support from skipper Justin Sedgmen who also added double figures from four outings.

Alfie Bowtell roared back into form with a score of 7+2 against his former club whilst reserve pairing Stefan Nielsen and Sam Hagon both chipped in with a race win apiece on their way to six points.

That was a total matched by guest Lewis Kerr whilst Paul Starke also contributed three third places.

Team Manager Stewart Dickson said: “That was the result we wanted and needed as a team and as a Club and it was one the supporters deserved as well.

“It was a much better performance right through the team with everybody scoring; we had a good couple of really strong individual performances and also one or two of the riders, they know who they are, bucked up their ideas and contributed what we’ve been expecting of them much more of late.

“But overall it’s three long awaited home points added to the table - we had good support again tonight from the people on the terraces and the people behind the glass cheering us on and the Birmingham fans deserve to see a winning team for sticking by us this season.”
