PREVIEW: BRUMMIES v REDCAR

Tuesday August 08, 2023
BIRMINGHAM kickstart a crucial run of fixtures when they host Redcar at Perry Barr on Wednesday (August 9, 7.30).

The Curtis Sport Brummies have seven Cab Direct Championship meetings to contest over the course of the next month with the Club still in with a shout of a play-off place.

They currently sit three points behind sixth placed Edinburgh in the standings but know the results of their three remaining home fixtures will have a big say in their hopes.

Brummies suffered heavy defeats at Perry Barr at the hands of Glasgow and Poole last month and know much-improved performances are required against another strong Redcar side.

The Bears have already won 52-38 in the Second City this season in the BSN Series and team boss Stewart Dickson knows his side will need to rise to the challenge the Teessiders will undoubtedly provide.

All-action Aussie Josh Pickering, who proved to be a popular guest choice on several occasions in 2022, has been booked to step in at No.1 on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, with a change to the greensheet averages for August, Paul Starke replaces Alfie Bowtell at reserve.

"It should be a very good Speedway meeting and it's one we're all looking forward to as a team," Dickson said.

"Redcar are a good side definitely; they've got three strong heat-leaders and I like the way the team is built.

"I do think our three heat-leaders on Wednesday can certainly match theirs but it's important that in the other areas we make sure we are scoring points.

"That won't be easy though because they've got a couple of second string riders who are hitting a bit of form and who like the Birmingham track.

"But we know this is an important meeting and we know the importance of getting off to a good start and maintaining that throughout."

Redcar include 2019 British Champion Charles Wright, recently crowned British Under-21 Champion Connor Bailey and a trio of former Brummies in Danny King, Erik Riss and Danyon Hume.

With it being the first home meeting of the school summer holidays, club chiefs have moved to make sure there’s plenty to keep junior supporters entertained from the moment they arrive at the stadium with doors opening at 6pm.

There will be a children’s entertainer providing plenty of fun and activities, including a picture trail hunt, whilst Brummie Bear will be joined by TV’s very own Bluey and Marshall from Paw Patrol.

The pits will also be open until 6.45 where riders will be available for photographs and autographs.

Even once the night of enthralling Speedway racing commences, there will be a further opportunity to take part in the interval entertainment on the infield.

A reminder it’s FREE admission for all children aged 11 and under at Perry Barr in 2023 while Juniors aged 12-16 will be admitted for just £3.

Season Tickets are valid for the fixture as are Advanced Five tickets.
