PLYMOUTH 57 BRUMMIES 32

Tuesday July 12, 2022
BIRMINGHAM suffered a heavy 57-32 defeat in their opening Championship Jubilee League fixture at Plymouth.

After a bright enough start at the Coliseum, the Curtis Sport Brummies faded in high temperatures in the South West as they were limited to just two race winners all night.

The meeting opened with five straight shared races, Justin Sedgmen taking the chequered flag in Heat Four.

But a devastating spell followed as the hosts reeled off a run five advantages, opening up a 37-22 lead by Heat Ten.

Birmingham's only heat advantage of the night came courtesy of guest pair Paco Castagna and Jason Edwards in the shape of a 4-2 in Heat 12 - before Plymouth sealed it in style with a hat-trick of 5-1s to finish.

Birmingham team manager Laurence Rogers said: "There were some very bad ruts on bends three and four which a lot of riders had problems with and one or two decisions went against us - but that's not an excuse really.

"Of course we're beyond disappointed with the final score, especially after making a decent start.

"We battled hard, particularly early on and we were still in with a shout at 27-21 with eight gone.

"But the 5-1 in Heat Nine and the 5-0 in Heat Ten destroyed us really.

"They then went on to finish with three 5-1s and that gave them a substantial victory - we're just not producing at the end these past few weeks.

"There certainly wasn't a lack of effort from the boys tonight - we just have to move on now and try and beat them at home."

The two sides meet again on Wednesday (July 13, 7.30), this time at the Perry Barr Stadium, the home of the Curtis Sport Brummies.
