PREVIEW: BRUMMIES v REDCAR

Tuesday June 21, 2022
POPULAR Paco Castagna makes a return to Birmingham colours when they host Redcar in the Championship on Wednesday (June 22, 7.30).

The 28-year-old guests in place of the injured Josh Auty as the Curtis Sport Brummies target back-to-back wins following their much-needed success over Plymouth last week.

The infectious Italian grew into a firm fans’ favourite after scoring 269 league points in two seasons at Perry Barr.

He recently returned with Edinburgh, who he joined over the winter, and scored a solid 8+1.

Castagna is looking forward to being back in the home pits on this occasion though and is hoping he can play his part for his former employers.

“It’s a place that will always have a piece of my heart,” he said.

“We all know how much I enjoyed my time at Birmingham, apart from the old management problems that we had.

“It’s always good to go back to Birmingham now though and I look forward to doing a good meeting and putting on a show for the fans as always.”

It will be yet another stern test for the Curtis Sport Brummies though with Redcar another play-off bound side.

The two have been involved in some intense, feisty clashes in recent seasons with plenty of good racing thrown in for good measure.

And after ending the losing rot last week, co-owner Nigel Tolley wants to see a similar display from his riders.

“Just for a change, everything more-or-less went our way against Plymouth and we came away with the kind of result that we should’ve been getting a lot more times this season,” he said.

“It was important to get some more league points on the table and although Redcar also look like another strong team, the riders will be able to carry through some confidence from that win over Plymouth I'm sure.”

After missing recent home fixtures because of Danish League commitments, Claus Vissing is due back in the Brummies’ line-up at No.1.

Meanwhile, Redcar are led by 2019 British Champion Charles Wright and include former Brummies Erik Riss and Adam Roynon in their line-up.

BIRMINGHAM: Claus Vissing, Stefan Nielsen, Paco Castagna, Ashley Morris, Justin Sedgmen, James Shanes, James Pearson.

REDCAR: Charles Wright, Adam Roynon, Erik Riss, Kasper Andersen, Lewis Kerr, Jason Edwards, Jordan Jenkins.
