BRUMMIES 38 LEICESTER 52

PATCHED-UP Birmingham were beaten 52-38 by league leaders Leicester on Wednesday.

It was a fourth straight loss for the Curtis Sport Brummies who were without three of members of their squad.

They were always going to face a stern test from a Lions side who had won five straight fixtures going into the derby at Perry Barr.

The visitors took the lead as early as Heat Two with a 5-1 before the Brummies gated on a maximum of their own in Heat Three.

But captain Ashley Morris lifted out of bend two and was disqualified for collecting Richie Worrall down the back straight .

From there on in, Leicester had it all their own way and were 12 ahead by Heat Eight.

Back-to-back 4-2s prior to the interval saw the Brummies reduce that deficit to eight, but the visitors sealed four league points with successive maximums in Heats 13 and 14.

Only two Birmingham riders took the chequered flag on another tough night in the Second City.

Guest No.1 Erik Riss found two wins on his way to double figures, while recent recruit Justin Sedgmen was again the standout performer dropping just one point to the opposition from five rides with four wins to his name.

Said Sedgmen: "Leicester have got a very strong team and I'd be very surprised if they don't make the final.

"No excuses though, it is what it is.

"The boys tried pretty hard, it was a little bit frustrating and for me I knew we couldn't get anything out of the meeting and I wanted to end on a bit of a high.

"So I chose not to do Heat 15 tonight, which I normally wouldn't do, but I just wanted to settle on a win and concentrate on the next stuff."

Birmingham are back in action next Tuesday against home specialists Plymouth (Tuesday, June 7, 7pm) before hosting Edinburgh at Perry Barr next Wednesday (Wednesday, June 8, 7.30) in a crucial Championship clash.
