BIRMINGHAM have been handed a pleasant surprise with German ace Erik Riss declaring himself fit for Wednesday’s cup clash with Redcar at Perry Barr (7.30).

There had been concerns Riss would miss the rest of the season with a serious shoulder injury but he’s been back on a bike over the weekend and reported no adverse reaction.

Now he’s ready to line-up against his former club for the controversial restaging of the cup tie abandoned on opening night.

Brummies boss Laurence Rogers is delighted. He said: "Having Erik back in the side is a real huge boost to us.

"A dislocation of the shoulder joints is a strange and complicated injury - but he's received several pieces of medical advice and has been told no operation is required.

"With that in mind he was keen to get back on the bike at the first available opportunity and to be honest, it couldn't have been timed much better than the cup tie with Redcar.

"Of course it's nicely poised with just a couple of points between the two sides and we have a real belief that we can do enough to get through to the next round.

"But we'd rather Erik put himself through the paces in a fixture like that than in a league meeting if that makes sense?

"He's confident he's fit enough and hopefully it won't take him too long, if at all, to get back into the swing of things.

"We've got a busy and important run of league fixtures coming up from next week right through until September and we're going to need a fully fit, fully firing 1-7.

"We need to recover from the two home defeats we've had so far and we still believe that this team can get into those play-offs.

"It hasn't been easy for some of the boys who've only got the one team place but the more laps they get under their belts, the more points they're going to score.

"That's another reason why this cup tie against Redcar couldn't have come at a much better time as it's another real opportunity away from the pressures that league racing brings to get their teeth stuck into something and build their confidence back up.

"We know what the riders in this team are capable of and it's only a matter of time until they show that again."
