NEW Birmingham signing Valentin Grobauer insists he’s back and he’s better - and he’s ready for his debut on Wednesday night.

The German made his first appearance in British Speedway with recently closed club Somerset two years ago, but quit part way through the season due to a lack of enjoyment.

He was also frustrated by inconsistencies in his scoring - but that’s something he intends to put right, starting against Redcar at Perry Barr on Wednesday night (June 2, 7.30).

“I’ve learnt a lot from 2019 when I came over here for the first time,” Grobauer said.

“Things didn’t go to plan then but we’re here to improve and I’m really looking forward now.

“I had some good races in my first year but I also had some bad rides too.

“I want to put the first and second places together a lot more and I want to score bigger points for Birmingham.”

One factor he feels will help him settle in at Perry Barr is familiarity with his teammates.

“Knowing people definitely makes things a little bit easier,” Grobauer said.

“Bomber (Chris Harris) is a good man who I raced with at Somerset and I also know Shanesie (James Shanes) from Germany and some longtrack races.

“I know Ashley Morris too and me and Erik (Riss) have been together for Landshut in the league for a couple of years so having friends around will help me talk about everything.

“There should be high hopes for Birmingham this year because it really is a great team and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

“Redcar will not be an easy call but if we can all pull it together then I think we have a really great chance of beating them over two legs which would be a great way to get the year started over such a strong team.”

Tickets for Wednesday’s Perry Barr opener remain on sale online until 11pm tomorrow night - or fans can book their tickets at the stadium tomorrow between 5pm and 6.30.
