RISS STARS IN THRILLER

Sunday September 19, 2021
ELECTRIC Erik Riss was in stunning form to help Birmingham to a thrilling 45-44 win on an emotional night at Newcastle.

A bumper crowd turned out with Diamonds owner Rob Grant staging his last meeting before leaving the club and with no prospect of a takeover the future looks bleak for the sport on Tyneside.

Riss notched 15+1 and guests Leon Flint and James Sarjeant scored well to help the Brummies stay in contention – just – for a play-off spot.

They will need all three points from Wednesday’s home meeting with the Diamonds at Perry Barr.

Boss Laurence Rogers said: “To say we only had three of our regular Brummies, of course I’m delighted to get the win.

“Unfortunately, it’s not quite the four league points we were hoping for and that does put more pressure on our final two meetings, particularly at Glasgow next Friday where we’ll now need a draw if we win at home on Wednesday.

“But still, to get another away win was good and we can’t complain too much.

“For me I think the meeting was won down at reserve with Leon (Flint) and Sarj (James Sarjeant) scoring 20-points between them and Risky (Erik Riss) was on it again tonight.

“Bomber (Chris Harris) found things a bit more difficult than usual because it’s not the sort of track you can easily make a pass on, particularly with how track conditions were.

“Josh (Macdonald) and Ash (Morris) struggled, but we just about did enough to get over the line.

“Now we move onto Wednesday where we know three points is a must in our final home league fixture of the season.”
