BIRMINGHAM have been forced into a late team change ahead of the forthcoming 2020 Championship campaign.

Tomas H Jonasson is the rider leaving the Brummies after his home Swedish league club, Valsarna, made the late decision to switch the majority of their home fixtures to a Wednesday night.

The Birmingham management have moved quickly though to snap-up former Somerset man Valentin Grobauer.

Team manager Laurence Rogers explained: “The news certainly gave us a major headache so close to the new season and we reluctantly accepted Tomas’ decision.

“One of his major sponsors are heavily linked with his Swedish club and it is a big shame as we felt he was coming in on a bargain average.

“We’ve scoured the list of available riders and their various commitments with the Danish League and now the Swedish leagues to also contend with.

“We’ve plumped for Valentin though and he was keen to get a team place sorted over here again.

“The meetings I saw him in last year, he showed sparks of his potential with some impressive rides and race wins – he just needs to add a bit of consistency to his armour.

“He knows Bomber (Chris Harris) from Somerset last year so that’s a bonus and with a bit of belief and faith I think Valentin can become a solid rider for us.”

Meanwhile co-owner David Mason said: “We thought it was too good to be true when he had our side sorted nice and early without any problems.

“But we can’t dwell on it as ever; Laurence has spent hours working on this and we now welcome Valentin to our ranks and we are sure the fans will get right behind him and give him the encouragement and support he needs to kick on.”
