BIRMINGHAM have appointed Lawrence Fielding as assistant manager ahead of the 2020 Championship season.

Fielding is the man behind Carmarthen’s revival which has seen them compete in the Midland and Southern Development League as they continue to search for land of their own.

The Welshman has known current team boss Laurence Rogers for a number of years and will shadow him in the opening weeks of the season.

Rogers explained: “I’m due a hip replacement fairly soon and it’s going to knock me about for a while.

“So I spoke to David and Peter (Mason – co-owners) and with my sensible head on for a change, I decided to ask if we could get an assistant team manager in to help me.

“Lawrence is a great guy; I used to give him some second half race time and he attended some of my training schools too.

“He’s very knowledgeable about the sport and he’ll be a good addition to the club I’m sure.”

Meanwhile Fielding himself said: “Racing at this level is a totally different ball game to what I’m used to but I’m just going to go with the flow as they say.

“It’s going to be a big learning experience for myself but it’s one I’m really looking forward to.

“For the first few weeks I’m just going to be shadowing Laurence, getting used to all the different rulings at this level and just settling into the club really.

“I’ve built bikes myself so mechanically I’d like to think I know what I’m doing and that can be a feather in my cap in terms of helping some of the lads along the way.

“I certainly don’t mind a challenge and this is an exciting opportunity for me.”

Birmingham launch their season at Perry Barr on Wednesday, April 8 when Somerset are the visitors in the league.
